Tretyakov Gallery Guided Tour
Tour Details
At the indicated time, we'll meet in the museum lobby to begin this guided tour of the Tretyakov Gallery. Its name pays tribute to the collector Pavel Tretyakov, a passionate patron who amassed one of the finest collections of Russian art. Thanks to his efforts, the gallery opened its doors to the public in 1856 with more than 2,000 pieces.
One of the museum's most important paintings is The Morning of the Streltsy Execution by Vasily Surikov, a monumental painting that dramatically captures one of the most tragic episodes of Tsarist Russia. We'll discover all the secrets of this painting as we learn about other outstanding works of Russian art, such as Vereshchagin's The Apotheosis of War, which will make us reflect on the conflicts of war.
We'll also visit other rooms dedicated to Russian artists such as Fedotov, Vasnetsov, Rokotov and Kiprenski, the author of the famous Portrait of Alexander Pushkin.
As well as that, we'll visit the extraordinary collection of Russian Orthodox icons. Most of these polychrome panels date from the Middle Ages, although some from other periods, from the 15th to the 19th century, are also on display.
Before concluding this 2-hour tour, we'll enjoy the sculptures and drawings housed in the museum. These pieces make the Tretyakov Gallery an important centre for understanding both Russian and international fine arts.
